We understand tooth pain is a scary position to be in once it happens...
There are many dental conditions that constitute emergencies and require urgent treatment. For optimum results, severe injury to the teeth and gums should be treated immediately. If ignored and left untreated, dental emergency conditions can worsen and result in tooth loss, severe infection, and permanent damage to the anatomy of the mouth.
Examples
Knocked-out Tooth
If the entire tooth is knocked out, it may be possible to save the tooth if we act immediately. You should try to rinse off any dirt and debris and try to reposition it back in the mouth and hold it in place until you see us. If you are not sure which way to place the tooth, keep it in a glass of milk and bring it to us.
Chipped or Cracked Teeth
If you have chipped your tooth or a piece of filling or crown fell off, try to keep the piece with you and bring it to your dental appointment as soon as possible. If you leave it as is, there is a concern the exposed surface may become infected.
Mouth and Gum Trauma
With any tissue injuries, such as cuts, tears or lacerations to the cheek, lip or tongue, rinse the wound carefully with water then apply firm gentle pressure to stop bleeding. If the injury is significant, go to the hospital immediately.
Dental Abscess
If you have a toothache, rinse with warm salt water or floss to try and dislodge any trapped food. Applying Orajel to the area may help it calm down and provide some relief. If there is any swelling to the face area, try applying a cool compress and take an over the counter pain relief. See a dental specialist to avoid the infection spreading to the rest of your body.
